About
I didn’t always care about newspapers.
I’ve been a web developer for about 10 years now. A few years ago, I started a project involving business directories – large business directories, like every business in Canada type big. I was looking for local partners that could update the business directory locally, and do the actual selling part.
It struck me that community newspapers need to talk to every business in their area. They have salespeople, graphics people, and recently, even web people. They were perfect.
So I went to talk to my own local paper people. It turned out, they needed some work done on their website. So did every other paper in the country, at the time. So I went to work for them, revamped their site, made it a community portal, bumped up their traffic about 50 times, won some awards. Got hooked.
Turns out newspapers are in trouble, and not handling the transition to the web well at all. Decided to go to college for journalism, so I could get into an editorial management role where people might actually listen to what I have to say about newspaper websites.
My name is Tim Burden. I study newspaper websites. This blog contains some of my thoughts on how newspaper companies should proceed.
