The curtain rises…and a new age dawns.

Published by Tim under Uncategorized

I feel I’ve been the unwitting midwife at a strange and unholy birth.

It all started Friday, when my fiance thought up a new name for a blog. Not her own, of course – she doesn’t do that kind of thing – but maybe mine or someone else’s.

Festivus tecnicus. Technology for the rest of us.

“Why don’t you do that, honey?”

Yesterday we made up a nice new look for her new blog. She’s already logged three blog posts. Addicted.

And this was the same Luddite who would argue the supremacy of print over online until the blue in her face shone through the black inky newspaper smudges.

Is this a trend? The 8 million Canadians on Facebook say yes. Social networking, Web 2.0, whatever you want to call it, is making converts. People in the news biz who used to see the Internet as either a convenient research tool, or a sleazy random pile of gibberish – or both – now see the value of participating.

Where before chatrooms and forums were for lurkers and leches and pervs, now Facebook and Twitter and blogs are for serious people doing business and networking.

I’ve created a monster. And I’m proud.

Check out her last post. She’s got a great sense of humour.

Update, March 18, 2008: The unholy beast has died in the cradle. Not enough feedback, I suppose. Nurture, love, nourish…ah, too late.
